The FIA Formula E Championship is Coming to New York City
Racing fans in and around New York City should be thrilled to learn that the FIA Formula E Championship is coming to them in 2017. Jaguar North America has just announced that the world’s first fully electric racing series will take place in New York City, and we here at Jaguar Great Neck couldn’t be more excited. Here’s everything that we know so far.
The FIA Formula E Championship
The introduction of the FIA Formula E Championship to New York City was announced on September 21. At a press conference in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E, announced that next year’s ePrix double-header will take place in the city.
That makes this the first FIA-sanctioned open-wheel race to find its home within the boroughs of New york City in modern history. New York now joins an exclusive list of cities — including Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Paris, Marrakesh, and Montreal — that have been able to play host to the event.
The Upcoming Race
Organizing an FIA Formula E race through the streets of New York City was never going to be easy, but the team at Jaguar certainly seems to have thought up something interesting. The circuit will feature 13 turns as it winds its way through Pier 11 and the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. Entrants will be able to fight it out across the 1.21-mile course, with the iconic lower Manhattan skyline and Statue of Liberty looming large in the background.
Those races are currently scheduled for July 29 and 30 of 2017, and will mark the final two rounds of the 2016/17 race calendar.
In the words of FIA President Jean Todt, “Just being able to bring a motor race to the heart of a great city like New York is already an amazing achievement in itself. I am really pleased that this city is going to feature on the calendar of an FIA championship.” We’re just as eager for the days of the race to roll around.
